How to Select Boating and Marine Binoculars

Source:Ruilong  Time:2010-12-7

Consideration One.
Start looking at binoculars in the 7 X 50 rating range. Those are generally considered boating and marine binoculars. You may find that your personal preference varies a bit, but the 7 X 50 binoculars are a good starting point.

On water, unlike land-based binocular usage, consideration has to be given to the boat's bobbing movements. Any power higher than the 7X magnification often causes the image to appear shaky and unclear. That's because the image is just too large to hold steady in that moving environment. From the objective lenses, the large 50mm rating allows more light to be gathered, pass through the binoculars, and create clarity and brightness in your image.

Consideration Two.
Waterproofing should be a prime feature of your boating and marine binoculars. While that statement may seem unnecessary, given you are on water, waterproof binoculars can be a moving target. Many manufacturers use different terms to promote their binoculars degree of waterproofing. What may be waterproof to one brand may mean water-resistant, weather proof, or some other proof to others. Be safe and insist only on waterproof binoculars. Consider all the other "proofs" to be lesser degrees of waterproofing.

Along with waterproof binoculars one also typically gets fog proofing and rust resistant features. Fog proofing is a result of pumping air out of the binoculars and filling that space back up with nitrogen gas and then O-ring sealing the binoculars. Rust resistance is a necessary feature on or near water, especially against salt-water spray. Both features are normally a by-product of waterproof binoculars.

Consideration Three.
Lenses Coating. Since much of your time is going to be spent on water you must combat against glare and reflection from the sun and water. Lenses coating reduce reflection and glare. At a price. The more the binoculars optic lenses are coated the greater their effect against reflection and glare. However, one of the largest factors in increasing the price of binoculars is the amount of coatings applied to the optic glasses. More lenses coatings equal better binoculars at a higher cost.

Consideration Four.
Comfort and Holding. Look for waterproof binoculars that promote a feature referred to as rubber armored coating. This coating satisfies two features. First, it provides protection for the binoculars against bumps and scratches. But just as importantly, it helps create a surface on the binoculars that is easy to grip and hold. Dropping binoculars can cause damage and tend to weaken the binoculars internal waterproof features.

Consideration Five.
Lenses Covers. These covers are used to cover the front objective lenses and the rear ocular lenses when the binoculars are not in use to protect them from scratches and bumps. Look for covers that remain physically attached to the binoculars when taken off from the lenses. Remember, you're on water and loose caps typically either fall overboard or are quickly lost. Twist up or flip down lenses covers are two types that remain attached and are just moved out of the way when the binoculars are used.

Consideration Six.
Floating Strap and Harnesses. Many manufacturers include binoculars neck straps or shoulder harnesses as accessories to the purchase. While not overly expense, it is an unnecessary loss to inadvertently drop one overboard and watch it sink downward. Better quality waterproof binoculars, especially those geared to boating and marine activities, often offer marine grade floating neck strap or harnesses.
