Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope
Source:Ruilong Time:2012-5-4The Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope is the most common type of hybrid telescope. A hybrid telescope is one that takes aspects of both reflecting and refracting telescopes and combines them. In the case of the Schmidt-Cassegrain this means combining a large aperture with a long focal length. Since reflecting telescopes suffer from short focal lengths and refractors don't have large apertures, this telescope seems almost too good to be true. It is real, but there are some catches. Foremost, Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes can be much more expensive than the other types of telescopes, they also don't have quite as wide a field of view. Hower, Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes almost all use the tripod mount and most of them come with computer-controlled mounts, so beginning astronomers find them helpful.
If money is not an issue then the benefits of Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes easily out weight the downsides, making them one of the most common amateur astronomy telescopes. Buy a Schmidt-Cassegrain if you are willing to spend some money to get the best view of the sky possible.
