The most commonly used telescope is the reflecting
Source:Ruilong Time:2012-5-14By far, the most commonly used telescope is the reflecting. It uses a large curved mirror to gather light and reflect it back through an eyepiece. This is the type of telescope that is used in the professional observatories. The reflecting telescope is so popular because it is relatively cheap compared to the other kinds and can have a very large aperture, so it can see very faint objects. Because of this the reflecting telescope is excellent at viewing deep space objects, such as nebula and galaxies. However these telescopes tend to be fairly large and bulky because of their large aperture.
Reflecting telescopes are usually mounted in one of two ways. The first is on a tripod mount. These mounts are useful for smaller telescopes because they allow the telescope to be lifted to eye height. These mounts can also be easily computerized and many of them come with GoTo and tracking technology already built in. The tripod mount can't hold larger, heavier telescopes, for those a different mount is required called a Dobsonian mount. The Dobsonian mount is much cheaper than a tripod mount and so is a good option if money is an issue, however it also holds the telescope much closer to the ground. If the telescope isn't that big then you might have to use a table to set it on.
Overall reflecting telescopes are very nice pieces of equipment. Buy a reflecting telescope if you are interested in objects outside of our solar system or outside of our galaxy, with a good reflecting telescope you will easily be able to see these things.
