Night optics is often used in military campaigns and in hunting activities. High-powered guns are often fitted with rifle scopes to help the soldier or the hunter in accurately shooting their targets. Additional equipment such as night vision goggles, monocular, and vision scopes are also used in conjunction with binoculars. NVDs (night vision devices) in general have become widely available to the general public due to the development of new technology which has made its manufacture and distribution cheap and affordable to the public.Rescue and law enforcement operations - firemen, policemen, and rescue personnel are now able to perform rescue operations in total darkness thanks to NVD technology. Law enforcement teams such as SWAT and border patrol agents have also made use of this technology to capture criminals and illegal immigrants.

There are many uses of products equipped with such capabilities and aside from hunting and military use, NVDs can be used for:

Scientific study - nocturnal creatures such as the night owl, bats, flying squirrels, and lemurs can now be observed by scientists discreetly using cameras equipped with night vision.

Navigation - sailing at night can especially be dangerous. River rafting or boating, or just generally being out on the water on a moonless night can be hazardous if you have no way of seeing the way in front of you. With night vision technology, sailors and helmsmen can now navigate their way in the dark.

Security - security cameras are often equipped with such features so it can see in the dark. Some guards in high-security facilities are also given scopes that come equipped with such capability to see in the dark.

Recreation - there are now cheap binoculars night vision being sold purely for recreation, as toys, as simple gadgets for hobbyists, as add-ins and extra features in video cameras and cameras in general; the recreational uses of night vision devices are many and limited only by one's imagination. Night optics has also been proven an invaluable tool for campers and specifically for spelunkers, who often go around in caves that are totally pitch-black in darkness.
