 How to Care For Binoculars

Published 2010/12/26 19:17:00 - Ceramic Ball

Recommended procedures

Your binoculars are precision instruments. This article will inform you of the best and most recently recommended methods of caring for your binoculars. Proper care will insure longer life, proper viewing and sharper optic viewing. This article does not include cleaning your binoculars.

"Caring for your Binoculars"

Caring for your binoculars should not be considered a task or time consuming project. Caring for your binoculars is relatively simple and takes very little time, effort or equipment. Good habits are easily attained and simple if you follow the information listed below. Binoculars can range from inexpensive to very expensive models although caring for them is basically the same. Your binoculars will give you years of great service when handled with proper care. Protect your investment.

o In almost all cases your binoculars came in a 'Carrying/Protective Case' with an attached strap for carrying on your shoulder or around your neck. The 'case' is for carrying, storage and protection. Keep your binoculars in their 'case' whenever you are not viewing to prevent banging of your binoculars as well as to keep dirt, foreign debris and inclement weather from effecting the life and performance of your optics. Also store with the rubber eye cups in the up or unfolded position and keep all protective lens covers and caps on unless viewing. If you are out walking, such as hunting, birding or just general landscape/nature viewing, carry your binoculars in their case for protection until ready to use, especially in inclement weather. Keeping your binoculars in their case with the lens covers 'on' until needed for viewing is the 'most' effective and recommended way of protection.

o Banging, as mentioned above, along with dropping, is the most common source of mistreating binoculars (besides improper lens cleaning which is discussed below). Banging and or dropping can cause misalignment of the barrels (the two low power telescopes attached by a hinge) which in turn will result in a blurred or double image rendering your binoculars basically useless, unless you view through only one lens. Your binoculars are then only useful as a "monocular" and are no longer binoculars as you will not be able to see a clear image through both eyepieces at the same time. Even slight misalignment can be devastating to your viewing. Banging or dropping can also result in cracking or breaking of your optic lenses. The cost to repair misaligned binoculars or a broken lens is not usually worth the repair cost unless the binoculars are of a very expensive nature or have an unconditional replacement warranty. Warranties will normally not cover misalignment or a broken lens although some manufacturers may.

o Binocular manufacturers know that banging and or dropping can cause misalignment of the barrels and most have taken steps to insure the connection between the two barrels is sturdy and precise. Even so, banging and dropping can still cause misalignment so handle your binoculars with care at all times.

o If your binoculars are waterproof/fog proof, excessive banging and or dropping can cause the nitrogen inside the barrels to escape voiding their waterproof/fog proof status.

o All binoculars come with a 'safety' or 'neck strap' attached to the binoculars that is normally adjustable in length. When viewing, always put the safety strap over your head to prevent accidental dropping of your binoculars. Insure that if others use your binoculars, they too install the safety strap over their head.

o 'Armor' or 'rubber' coated binoculars are great at absorbing most of the shock generated by low impact banging. This rubber coating does not necessarily help if your binoculars are dropped or banged excessively.

o Even though your binoculars may be waterproof and or fog proof, keep them dry when possible. Wipe any water off with a soft cloth or towel before storing.

o Do not store your binoculars in an excessively hot or cold vehicle. The excessive heat can cause swelling of the barrels which in turn can cause one or both of the objective (large lens) lenses to pop out or crack. Excessive heat and cold can also cause moisture or condensation to build up inside the binoculars. Don't leave your binoculars on the dash of a vehicle even if they are in the case. The sun shining through the windshield can magnify the outside temperature many times.

In conclusion, practice care in handling your binoculars as they are precision instruments.

Should you still have concerns regarding "Caring for your Binoculars", contact the manufacturer's technical department or website to insure proper cleaning.

Telescopic Binoculars - Tailor Made For the Astronomer

Published 2010/12/21 18:16:00 - Ceramic Ball

All thanks to the man who first invented the first telescope. Unfortunately he died anonymous. As they say, the Great live and die in silence. But Hans Lippershey who popularized the use of it was luckier to be recognized. Later on its use was extended to the skies by Galileo Galilee in the study of astronomy. With his first astronomical telescope he introduced the heavens to the world. Being the first of its kind, it had its limitations. The arrangement of the glass lenses hindered further magnification. This was in the year 1609. Almost 100 years later another great scientist Sir Isaac Newton altered the telescope inserting a curved mirror that would absorb the light and reflect it to a particular point of focus which magnified objects millions of times greater than the ordinary lens. The telescopes that you and I use today follow the same designs but with larger mirrors and improved technology.

The telescope as the word suggests is an instrument facilitating the extension of a scope to a far distance. And the binocular is an extension of the telescope in usage. Telescopes collect more light and provide high resolution images allowing greater details to be seen of greater distances. They come with different eyepieces for different focal lengths and are hence very flexible in configuration. But the monocular design, heavier weight and high costs makes it necessary to look at a more comfortable replacement.

Binoculars, unlike telescopes are fitted with two objective lenses and prisms, one for each eye, making them more comfortable to use and cheaper due to its low weight and size. But the power of the telescope does not come with the binocular.

Looking at the negatives of both these instruments, some optics geniuses thought of combining their positives and landing at a fresh combo which would be called the telescope binocular. This would be the best of both with the powerful lenses of the telescope and the very comfortable design of the traditional binocular. Some models even come with interchangeable lenses making different fields of view available. So the built-in lens of the binocular is done away with. If any of you out there is a budding astronomer, then you can be sure you have your best bet here. To see a great discussion about these instruments, look here astronomy binoculars.

Telescope binoculars are especially for the purpose of astronomy. They can however be used for other activities like bird watching or any such activity. Tailor made for the discovery of the skies; they are bulkier than the friendly binoculars and must be handled with care. But with no setup time, and easy portability, to the astronomer this combo pack has been a boon.

The high power astronomy telescope binoculars for amateur astronomers should not be confused with the the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), which has been atop Mt. Graham in Arizona, USA, the result of over two decades of effort, and is the largest telescope to have ever been made in terms of light collection capacity. Its resolution has been unrivalled by any other optical telescope so far. Not even the very sophisticated Hubble Space Telescope. Ever wondered how the first stars and galaxies formed or what the world beyond our solar system really looks like? Then you might get some clues to your curiosity from the LBT. It is one of the most remarkable advances in the quest to know the unknown.

The Best Created Wonders of Science - Binocular Glasses

Published 2010/12/20 18:17:00 - Ceramic Ball

Binocular glasses are a pair of identical or mirror-symmetrical telescopes, allowing the viewer to use both eyes to see distant objects clearly. Unlike monocular telescope, binoculars give users a three-dimensional image. Therefore, they are referred as the best created wonders of science.

They are created by Johannes Buttgenbach, who just added lens of a binocular to normal glasses to achieve image captured in distance. The binocular glasses, since their first inception, became the focus of global attention and then were patented in the United Stages and Europe by Johannes and began to be sold on the market.

Mostly made in German, binocular glasses are of high quality and are featured with light weight, so they are favoured with the pubic. People can wear them to watch football games, and anything that you want to see but is not visible to your unaided eyes. Another feature of binocular glasses is that they are detachable, meaning you can disassemble them into small parts, convenient to carry. There are even some models which can be flipped upwards, breaking no squares to your reading.

The greatest advantage they bear is the high quality optics. Wearing them, people will not experience eye strain or eye fatigue. What is more the patented grid system allows anyone be able to wear them according to their head sizes. They can also be customized according to the number that you have.

For more information, you can go through the Internet, in which not only related information, but also binocular glasses of different styles are displayed. You can even compare prices of the same model in different websites to check which site provides binocular at the lowest price.

Often, this is indeed the case but there are many generic brands out there that are no more expensive than a Parker Vector Rollerball Pen. So who would benefit from using promotional binoculars for promotion? From experience, if your business is similar to the following businesses, you may like to consider these fun business gifts.

Bird & Animal Watching Clubs: Binoculars will obviously go down well with such clubs. You can give them away to promote your business to the members or perhaps use the binoculars as a prize.

Different Makes and Models of Binoculars

Published 2010/12/13 17:58:00 - Ceramic Ball

Everybody knows how overwhelming it can be when it comes time to choose between different makes and models of Binoculars. But what it really boils down to is what are you going to do with the binoculars and how much are you willing to spend on your binoculars. Just remember that the most expensive binoculars are not always the best binoculars. I myself had a real expensive set of binoculars, and I ended up not using them, and I replaced them with a set of cheaper binoculars. It just depends on what you are comfortable with. I just want to let you know what is all out there and what the cost of some of these binoculars are.

Here are some of the major name brands that you might be familiar with or that you have seen advertised in stores. You have: Bushnell Binoculars, Burris Binoculars, Leupold Binoculars, Pentax Binoculars, Nikon Binoculars, Tasco Binoculars, and Sightron Binoculars. There are a few more brands, but these were your most common ones.

Well to break it down you have two main kinds of binoculars. You have auto-focus binoculars and you have the manual focus binoculars. I personally like the auto-focus binoculars. I like it when you see something out there I can pick up my binoculars and look right at it rather than having to try and focus the binoculars so I can make out the object. The auto-focus binoculars cost the same as the other binoculars. So there is no cost difference.

Binoculars come in many different strengths, depending on how far you want your binoculars to see. They range from seeing from 2 yards to 1,000 yards. Here are is a tip, the bigger the number the longer you can see. For example you have a Nikon Monarch 8x42 Binoculars, and then you have a Nikon 12x42 Binoculars. You will be able to see farther with the 12x42 rather than the 8x42. Will do another one lets say you have a Nikon Monarch 8x42 Binoculars, and a Nikon Dream Season 10x36 Binoculars. You can see farther with the 10x36 than the 8x42 binoculars.

You can get binoculars almost in any color including: black, brown, blue, red, green, gold, and real-tree camoflouge. Some binoculars also come so that they are waterproof. Binoculars cost anywhere from $15.00 to $800.00. Like I said earlier it all depends on how much you want to spend, and what you want them for. The nice thing about binoculars is that they are very universal for whatever you might be doing. You might use them for bird watching, hunting, hiking, camping, or even take them to your favorite football game when your way up on top of the stadium.

I hope this gave you a little bit more information about what is all out there for binoculars and that you don't have to buy the most expensive pair to satisfy your needs.

 Boating and Marine Binoculars

Published 2010/12/12 19:15:00 - Ceramic Ball

What should we look for when purchasing boating and marine binoculars?

Binoculars are usually considered when boating on open water such as large lakes or ocean areas. Typically one does not carry binoculars when fishing streams or local lakes - unless the boat is used as a platform for searching the shoreline for wildlife, birds, or terrain viewing. However in open water binoculars are a necessary boating accessory to help stay clear of rocky areas, driftwood, or other floating objects. Binoculars are also necessary to spot channel markers, observation points, and other boats during water travels.

Consideration One.

Start looking at binoculars in the 7 X 50 rating range. Those are generally considered boating and marine binoculars. You may find that your personal preference varies a bit, but the 7 X 50 binoculars are a good starting point.

On water, unlike land-based binocular usage, consideration has to be given to the boat's bobbing movements. Any power higher than the 7X magnification often causes the image to appear shaky and unclear. That's because the image is just too large to hold steady in that moving environment. From the objective lenses, the large 50mm rating allows more light to be gathered, pass through the binoculars, and create clarity and brightness in your image.

Consideration Two.

Waterproofing should be a prime feature of your boating and marine binoculars. While that statement may seem unnecessary, given you are on water, waterproof binoculars can be a moving target. Many manufacturers use different terms to promote their binoculars degree of waterproofing. What may be waterproof to one brand may mean water-resistant, weather proof, or some other proof to others. Be safe and insist only on waterproof binoculars. Consider all the other "proofs" to be lesser degrees of waterproofing.

Along with waterproof binoculars one also typically gets fog proofing and rust resistant features. Fog proofing is a result of pumping air out of the binoculars and filling that space back up with nitrogen gas and then O-ring sealing the binoculars. Rust resistance is a necessary feature on or near water, especially against salt-water spray. Both features are normally a by-product of waterproof binoculars.

Consideration Three.

Lenses Coating. Since much of your time is going to be spent on water you must combat against glare and reflection from the sun and water. Lenses coating reduce reflection and glare. At a price. The more the binoculars optic lenses are coated the greater their effect against reflection and glare. However, one of the largest factors in increasing the price of binoculars is the amount of coatings applied to the optic glasses. More lenses coatings equal better binoculars at a higher cost.

Consideration Four.

Comfort and Holding. Look for waterproof binoculars that promote a feature referred to as rubber armored coating. This coating satisfies two features. First, it provides protection for the binoculars against bumps and scratches. But just as importantly, it helps create a surface on the binoculars that is easy to grip and hold. Dropping binoculars can cause damage and tend to weaken the binoculars internal waterproof features.

Consideration Five.

Lenses Covers. These covers are used to cover the front objective lenses and the rear ocular lenses when the binoculars are not in use to protect them from scratches and bumps. Look for covers that remain physically attached to the binoculars when taken off from the lenses. Remember, you're on water and loose caps typically either fall overboard or are quickly lost. Twist up or flip down lenses covers are two types that remain attached and are just moved out of the way when the binoculars are used.

Consideration Six.

Floating Strap and Harnesses. Many manufacturers include binoculars neck straps or shoulder harnesses as accessories to the purchase. While not overly expense, it is an unnecessary loss to inadvertently drop one overboard and watch it sink downward. Better quality waterproof binoculars, especially those geared to boating and marine activities, often offer marine grade floating neck strap or harnesses.

Conclusion.

Boating and marine binoculars require a few additional considerations over land-based usage. However, none of the considerations require any deep thought. Just remember that you are on water, and build your buying decision on that fact. Boating and marine activities are an enjoyable experience. Use your waterproof binoculars to aid in that experience.

 Monoculars Vs. Binoculars

Published 2010/12/6 18:06:00 - Ceramic Ball

Binoculars are two telescopes mounted on one frame and used to view distant objects through magnification, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. A monocular is one telescope used to view distant objects. The main difference between the two is that you view with a monocular using only one eye; both eyes are used with binoculars.
.Monocular Functions
Monoculars are small enough to fit in your pocket but can provide magnification as strong as that provided by binoculars. The size of the lens determines the size of the monocular--a tool commonly used for bird-watching, golf and military activities. Monocular is a term that also applies to the viewers used in microscopes and telescopes. The first monoculars were used as telescopes, and most monoculars in use today are found in microscopes and telescopes.
Binocular Functions
Binoculars are more commonly used because they allow you to view in a more natural and comfortable way. They give depth perception and better visual acuity as you do not have to close one eye to see through binoculars. Due to this better range of vision, binoculars are used to follow movement, as with sporting and racing events.
Tips for Use
Monoculars in basic form are just point and view tools. You focus by rotating the body of the monocular. Some have special features like night vision--and such features require batteries. Binoculars have a dial between the barrels for focusing. Users should focus on a stationary object before trying to view a mobile object in the same range.
Magnification
Magnification is measured with two numbers. The first number is the actual magnification, and the second number is the lens diameter. For example, 7 x 50 indicates that objects will appear seven times closer and the lens is 50 millimeters in diameter. Some monocular and binoculars have power zoom, and this is represented with two numbers at the beginning, 10-30 x 50.
Price
Deciding between a monocular or binoculars depends on the intended use. A monocular is small and lightweight. Binoculars give you more range of vision and allow you to follow movement. A monocular can cost anywhere from $20 to more than $300 depending on the power of magnification and added features. Binoculars can cost from $30 to more than $2,000.

TWO alleged abalone traffickers from the Mornington Peninsula have been netted in a major fisheries operation.

A Rye man, 40, and a Rosebud man, 48, were arrested in a car park at the rear of a Chinese restaurant in Sunshine on November 19 and charged with abalone trafficking.

Diving equipment, a night viewing device, binoculars and radios, together with a commercial quantity of abalone, were allegedly discovered in a rental car and another car parked nearby.

A raid on a Rye home by Fisheries officers and local police followed last Wednesday week.

The pair were bailed to appear in Sunshine Magistrates Court on January 12.

Fisheries Victoria's chief investigator Murray Donaldson said evidence gathered before the arrests pointed to large-scale trafficking.

"The investigation is ongoing and more people will be interviewed.

"All the equipment, the abalone and a vehicle have been seized.

"Since 2004, possession or trafficking of commercial quantities of priority species, such as abalone, are indictable offences attracting penalties up to 10 years' imprisonment."

Mr Donaldson said abalone over-fishing could not be sustained.

"So the licensed commercial and recreational harvest is highly regulated. Any unlicensed activity is damaging to the resource, which is highly valuable to the Victorian community."

A 44-year-old Ascot Vale man has also been arrested and interviewed and will be charged on summons.
